The combined, brilliantly illuminated braggadocio of bridges drew the admiration of Hong Kong citizens still skeptical of the enormous construction costs involved. With the sunset providing a striking backdrop, fireworks and lasers lit up the evening sky on 27 April 1997, in an extensive display celebrating the opening of the Tsing Ma Bridge and the adjoining cable-stayed Kap Shui Mun Bridge.
