What you don't know
Hong Kong has a state-of-the-art building in Kwun Tong to house its official government records. But many of the most important records are not there. There is no law to compel government bureaux and departments to turn records over to an archival authority to either preserve or destroy as it sees fit. As producer Chris Lincoln found out, the public is kept in the dark about its own history. There are, however, places to find records of Hong Kong history outside of the government's public records office. Life here has been chronicled in parallel by long-established companies and Hong Kong's oldest university.
