The Shaw Prize 2010 : pain's pathways ; Maths maverick

The 2010 Shaw Prize for Life Sciences & Medicine : We feel pain because our sense of touch alerts us every time we are injured. So how does our body detect pain and our brain acknowledge it? American Biologist David Julius used hot chili peppers to identify a specific protein in our sensory nerve fibers that activates our pain signalling system, a ground breaking study that earned him this year's Shaw Prize for Life Sciences. The 2010 Shaw Prize for Mathematical Sciences : This year's Shaw Prize for Mathematical Sciences goes to Jean Bourgain, a Belgian mathematician whose vast trove of work has gained him recognition as one of the giants of 21st Century maths. One of his contributions is in the field of pseudorandomness, the process of generating random numbers that's used in cryptography, slot machines and video games.
