1867年香港大酒店在今置地廣場開業。這座原為四層高，後加建至六層高的著名大酒店，時人謂之「高矗青雲」。酒店內設有全港首次使用的升降機，可謂盛極一時。然而酒店不幸於1926年元旦遭大火燒至通頂，1929年不得不把地皮售與置地公司，改建告羅士打酒店。The Hong Kong Hotel was built in 1867 on what is now the site of the Landmark. It was six storeys high and one of the tallest buildings at the time in Hong Kong. It was famed for being the first to install a lift. It was badly damaged by fire on New Year’s Eve 1926 and demolished a few years later.
