The City Hall was built by public contributions in 1867, and was completed in 1869. It was formally inaugurated by H.R.H. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, on 2nd November 1869. The building was partly demolished in 1933 to make way for the present day Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Building and was completely pulled down in 1947. The Bank of China Building was eventually erected on the site. The Dent’s Fountain, which was donated by John Dent in 1864, later fell into disuse because of water shortage.這座大會堂是由市民集資於1867年興建，1869年竣工。同年11月2日由愛丁堡公爵（即艾爾弗雷德王子）正式主持開幕儀式。1933年，大會堂部分被拆卸以供香港上海滙豐銀行興建新廈，其餘部分亦在1947年全部拆去，原址稍後興建了中國銀行大廈。大會堂門前的噴泉是英商約翰‧顛地於1864年捐建的；多年後，因水源短缺而荒廢。
