1953年年底，石硤尾木屋區發生一場全港有史以來涉及面積最廣的大火，五萬多名居民痛失家園。政府為安置災民，興建石硤尾邨，成為香港第一個公共屋邨。At the end of 1953, a disastrous fire broke out in Shek Kip Mei squatter area. The fire swept through the widest area in the history of Hong Kong, making over 50,000 people homeless. Shek Kip Mei Estate, Hong Kong’s first public housing estate, was built to settle the victims.
