Lecture Abstract: Although Professor Jao Tsung-i was not primarily renowned as an art historian, his extensive knowledge of archaeology and literature, profound command of documentary sources, and personal practice of calligraphy and painting enabled him to enter the field of art-historical research. He authored numerous articles and several monographs on the subject. His research ranged from antiquity to the Qing dynasty, with the largest proportion devoted to calligraphy and painting, while also encompassing various other artistic media. His achievements in the field were substantial. Drawing on Professor Jao’s writings and poetry, newly discovered notebooks, visits to museums around the world and interactions with collectors, this lecture will reconstruct the development of his study and research in art history and examine the distinctive characteristics and contributions of his work in the field.
