Shatin

Shatin used to be a quiet and sparely populated rural farming area. Since the 60s though, Shatin was already a popular outing destination. People living in the city could take the train and quickly arrive at Shatin Station to visit sites such as the Amah Rock, the Sai Lam Temple and the Ten Thousand Buddhas' Monastery. In the 80s, the government developed Shatin into a new town and New Town Plaza at Shatin Station brought a lot of people to the area. At the same time, KCR gradually built Tai Wai Station and Racecourse Station, which enabled new recreational sites to emerge, including the bike park in Tai Wai, the Shatin racecourse and Penfold Garden. Shatin is said to be the best planned new town. Can it fulfill modern needs while retaining some of its original charms?
