Jardine House, Central District 中環怡和大廈

Jardine House, then known as Connaught Centre, qualified as Hong Kong's first true 'skyscraper', setting a new standard for the city's increasingly vertical profile when it rose from reclaimed land in 1973. Jim Kinoshita of Palmer and Turner opted for circular windows inset into a tiled concrete facade, influenced by China's traditional 'moon gates' and by the cross-section of its most versatile building material, the revered bamboo.
