Collecting night soil, Sichuan 四川稻農收集糞便作肥料

In the crush of the market, mingled odours assail the shopper - and none is more distinctive than the handcart heavy with night soil destined for the crops on hillside terraces. 'Collecting night soil means we do not have to buy so much chemical fertilizer,' explain the farmers who work the land surrounding the town. 'We prefer to use night soil because it makes crops grow faster and stronger. We collect it from farm ponds, schools, shops and factories. It may not be pleasant work, but it is part of farming and we all take turns. When the buckets are full it takes three people to move the cart - one pulls, two push!'
