Already by the 1880s, Hong Kong's 'simple traders' had managed to turn an unknown harbour on the southern tip of China into the British Empire's third largest port, after London and Liverpool, when Sir Alexander Grantham, Governor of Hong Kong, is quoted in 1950 as saying, 'We are just simple traders who want to get on with our daily round and common task.'
