Ethics, biotechnology, and the future of human nature

In this lecture, Sandel presents themes from his book, The Case against perfection: ethics in the age of genetic engineering: What are the social and ethical implications of cloning, genetic engineering to enhance athletic or academic performance, the use of new reproductive technologies to choose the sex and other traits of our children, and generally, the bid to remake human nature through the use of new genetic technologies? Sandel argues the drive to enhance human nature through genetic technologies is objectionable because it represents a bid for mastery and dominion that fails to appreciate the gifted character of human powers and achievements. The genetic revolution will change the way philosophers discuss ethics and will force spiritual questions back onto the political agenda.
