P&O Building, Central 中環鐵行大廈

The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, popularly abbreviated as the P&O, was known to the local community as the Tit-Hong, or Iron House. It commissioned its Hong Kong headquarters in the Italianate Arcade style, adding a distinctive grace note to the general waterfront panorama - although not for long. Its stately facade and tasteful proportions did not save it from demolition in 1881, when it became an early victim of Hong Kong's insatiable urge to constantly replenish itself.
