The Royal Sussex Lodge and the Zetland Lodge were established in 1846 and built a Masonic Hall on the site. The lodge was severely damaged in a bombing raid during the Japanese occupation. Subsequently a new Masonic hall was opened in 1950 on Kennedy Road, where it remains to this day.
