Desire and engagement : music in the films of Wong Kar-wai
"Wong Kar-Wai's films have become well known for their eclectic, fast-paced and montage construction leading, perhaps inevitably, to the label "postmodern". His films are also widely recognised for their musical deployments. Music in film can tell us much about the condition of music itself and the ways in which it imparts meaning; specifically, in Wong Kar-Wai's films, the soundtrack is often used as a means of mobilising a character's fantasies. The idea of music and desire, or even music as desire, seems to underscore how the soundtrack is working in Wong Kar-Wai's films, where the isolated thoughts of one character for another are frequently enacted musically."
