Beating Retreat had never before been performed on the lawns of Government House, and the thought on everyone's mind was that it never would be again. The gathering of more than five hundred invited guests assembled for the spectacle included Executive and Legislative Councils, previous governors, senior government officials, judges and Commonwealth consuls.
