Hardy Gurkha soldiers from Nepal patrolled Hong Kong's frontier from 1898, the year the New Territories were leased from China, to 1997. Their counterparts in the British Army instantly recognised the Nepalese soldiers as formidable foes when they met on the battlefield in the 19th century.
