If money were the religion of Hong Kong, 'the Bank' would be its cathedral. Until Sir Norman Foster's revolutionary design for the headquarters of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, the public image of this edifice, as exemplified by all three predecessors on its fundamentally strategic site, was of an inscrutable, granite-faced fortress, safeguarding the community's financial stability.
