Des Voeux Road Central in the 1950s. The Central reclamation scheme of the 1890s provided an opportunity to lay out the Central District in a grid pattern. The colony finally acquired broader streets on which imposing modern buildings made their appearance. This also allowed the implementation of a tramway system, since the reclamation was for the greater part on level ground.
