Elegant, curved arched bridges - this example in rural Fujian Province - were primarily gracefully constructed of granite. Arch bridges function by transferring the weight of the bridge and its loads capacity into a horizontal thrust restrained by the abutments at either end. A viaduct (a long bridge) for transporting water is created by a series of arches.
