Dust generation begins with desiccation of soil, a process that is enhaced by low humidity and high temperature. Using polymer solutions, it has been possible to retard the rate of soil desicaation in laboratory experiments at giees. This lecture focuses on the mathematical formulations that the speaker and his research team have developed to explain mechanisms of interaction between soil and polymer molecules and the implications of such interactions on the effectivenesss of dust palliation. Yeoh Eng-Kiong says his ministry is preparing for the possible return of SARS in winter. They will look for and correct the environment to prevent a super-spreader from causing an outbreak. He says adequate medical supplies are in stock and quarantine beds will be ready, so will the Centre for Disease Control (CDC). Arrangements have been made with World Health Organization and the CDC overseas, to enlist their help when needed. A notification system has been established with Guangzhou and Macau. Chinese medicine will be provided for treatment on request and a cocktail of western medicine will be used.
