The conceptual focus of this seminar is on "metalearning" a term used by Biggs (1985) to encapsulate two complementary features of deep level, self regulated, learning capacity; namely an awareness of, and control over, learning in a personal context. Helping students to develop metalearning capacity is, in effect, a process of developing skill in learning (in contrast to the acquisition of learning skills such as note taking, essay writing, using the library, and so on). This seminar outlines an ongoing programme of research aimed at developing students' metalearning capacity. The conceptual architecture of a web-based portal is described and demonstrated. This portal allows students to generate a contextualised 'learning profile' of themselves that is intended to serve as a basis for the first stage of developing metalearning capacity. Related mechanisms to develop the second stage of metalearning capacity is also described.

This short presentation outlines the experience of being transgendered ("trans") people in Asia. The speaker examines the role that the psychiatric pathologisation of transgender (the idea that it is a mental disorder) may play in the lives of trans people. Recent research in seven countries, most of them Asian, indicates the belief that trans people are mentally sick is strongly associated with transphobia. The speaker proposes the de-pathologisation of transgenderism along the lines of the recent de-pathologisation of homosexuality; specifically, the urgent removal of "gender identity disorder" and related terms from all psychiatric manuals currently in international usage.

The presentation reports on projects in Vancouver, Canada, Hong Kong and Xi'an China. These projects involved the teaching of English language and reading skills to children whose first language was not English. The projects emphasized both reading and oral language skills. Developing oral language skills, including phonological awareness, and phonics skills resulted in a positive transfer to reading and writing. With good instruction, the reading and oral language skills of the children with ESL were similar to native English speakers. The emphasis on oral language development and the involvement of the teachers were the key ingredients in the success of the programs.
